4 Must know about self feeding

Self feeding is an important development for children. Teaching children to self feeding may not be an easy thing. But feeding your child continuously until he grows up is not good either. This will only hinder its development.

Self feeding in children comes in phases, making it a long drawn out, but extremely rewarding, journey for you and your child. Although your child needs to reach toddlerhood to have the physical ability to self feed, it helps to start early. Here are the 4 must know things before you start letting your baby self feeding.

4 Must know about self feeding-1

Self feeding advantages

Some parents choose to continue feeding their children because they don't want their children to be messy or dirty while eating alone. In fact, this is a learning process that children must go through. Baby led weaning (BLW) is a method that allows babies to self feeding. Mama only needs to prepare food that has been processed according to the baby's ability to eat, then the baby can use his hands to take and feed the food. Letting children eat alone also teaches him many things. Self feeding have many advantages.

To prevent obesity

One of them is keeping children connected to their basic instincts (hunger) and listening to their own body cues (satiety). When a child is fed by another person, the child has the potential to eat more than they need, causing them to lose touch with their basic bodily instincts. In addition, it can also trigger stomach upset and can lead to eating problems later in life, such as obesity.

Helping children recognize the taste and texture of food

In applying the BLW method, food is served in a solid and larger form. This will allow your little one to recognize the texture because it is easy to grip. In addition, this method also introduces your little one to the various tastes, colors and aromas of the food he consumes.

Support children's motor development

Implementing the BLW method can support your little one's motor development, you know, Bun. This method can be a means for your little one to train eye and hand coordination, as well as chewing and grasping skills.

Make children enjoy the food they eat

Teaching your little one this method allows him to enjoy the food he is eating without the need to be forced to open his mouth. In addition, your little one can also be introduced to many types of food.

How to encourage self feeding

Don't help put food in their mouth

You could say BLW is a method for making your little one independent when eating. You should really try to step back and believe that your baby can put food well in his mouth. Don't help put food in his mouth and you don't have to worry if you think he doesn't eat much. At this stage, food is a way for your little one to experiment and learn. As extra nutrition, your child will get what he needs from his milk, whether formula milk or breast milk.

Try offering a variety of foods

After your baby learns to use a spoon (holding objects between fingers and thumbs a.k.a. pincer grasp), you can introduce berries and raisins, or peas. Don't overwhelm your baby with too much food, having in front of him two or three items at a time is sufficient.

Be patient

It is better if you don't rush when you want to let your children self feeding, because your child will choke on food if his age is not suitable, another reason is because he is not good at chewing food that is too solid. Wait until your baby is six months old and make sure he can sit up straight before starting self feeding. Be patient is the key.

Nothing comes easy with the baby. Every habit and every successful milestone is a result of someone’s effort. It could be you, your nanny, your spouse, the siblings or even strangers.

4 Must know about self feeding-10

Best self feeding age

Learning to self feeding can generally begin at the age of 9 months, when children are able to grasp their own food. At this age, parents is allowed to give them finger foods or foods that are easy to grasp. Children will become interested in holding their own spoon, fork, or water bottle in both hands when they are 13–15 months old.

In my daughter case, I let her start hold when she was 7 months. The food does not always fill the spoon and she not always succeeds in putting it in her mouth. Not a little food will also fall on the floor or table.

Around 18-24 months of age, they will begin to be adept at putting their own food into his mouth less messy. However, your little one must always be supervised when learning to eat on their own. Because they are still learning, sometimes children may choke, cough, or vomit. Later when your little one enters the age of 24–36 months, they will be more adept at eating and enjoying their own food without the need for help from adults.

My favorite self feeding spoon

You might be wondering if you can just get away with using a regular old steel spoon to feed your baby. After all, if it’s good enough for you to eat with, shouldn’t it be fine for a baby?

Some old-school parents will shrug and say that you can feed a toddler just fine without buying yet another special tool. But most feeding authorities recommend using a shallow, plastic children’s spoon for feeding, since it’s easier for them to eat from and won’t hurt their delicate mouths.

Combined spoon and teether

Some spoons are made a little larger with a more chewy texture, for those teething kids who to bite down on as they eat. The teething element may encourage some kids to use the spoon.

Grabease stage 1 silicone spoon

The soft spoon is perfect for tiny mouths during the early stages of self-feeding, and the textured handle soothes little one's gums during teething. Kickstart BLW with Grabease stage 1 self-feeding silicone spoon.

Shaped ergonomic spoons

Little hands can be clumsy and a spoon is hard to hold. This style of spoon is usually chunkier and shaped to help toddlers get to grips with their fine motor skills.

Grabease stage 2 spoon and fork

Grabease patented fork and spoon sets were the first utensils designed with babies’ independence in mind, and they come highly recommended by Occupational Therapists. The ergonomic handle fits comfortably in babies' natural hand grasp, making the hand-to-mouth motion easier. This set will also help strengthen their fingers while encouraging proper pencil grasp development (this will come in handy later!).

SUYON kids-friendly nail polish review - What make it different from other nail polish?

When I first received SUYON kids-friendly nail polish, I can’t wait to try it. My 5 years daughter like to have her nail being take care by the expert, I can see the joy in her face every time I took her to menicure and have her nail polished. And I found out SUYON in the internet, before bought SUYON, I also have many thoughts about what make SUYON different from other kids-friendly nail polish brand on the market?

I purchased different brands to give as gifts for my daughter and paint my nails as well. However, my excitement immediately turned into disappointment. The ingredients might be safe, but the quality and designs did not quite match my expectations. It simply seemed like an imitation of typical adult nail polishes that were labeled for children. Now, after weeks of trial, I can tell you why we love SUYON.

Now I can make sure that your little princess can have the most adorable and shiny nails with the SUYON nail polish which are not only dazzling, but also 100% healthy!

SUYON pros and cons

SUYON is quite new comparing to a lot of nail polish brands on the market, it is started on 2018, a Canadian brand. I thought this is why their product can be this good, they must have observed and did improvements, lol. I bought SUYON from Amazon, the rating is 4.7 star.

SUYON pros

  • What I love most about SUYON is their cute bottle cap, a very nice design, very easy for little hand to hold.

  • I like that the polish can easily be peeled off. There isn't a need for any special remover. And easy to peel without pulling off your nails. Comes off in water, but I took it to bath and no problem, but if I do the dishes, it will be ragged a bit, especially on the edge.

  • It stays on well and has no toxic odor. Goes on easily, it takes a while to air dry, so you need to be careful.

  • SUYON is made in France, where all the world’s famous make up produce.

  • Do you know that each SUYON nail polish character even have their own bio? I can even use it for story-telling time :)

  • SUYON complies the strictest worldwide safety regulations: FDA, Europe and Japan Safety requirements. Even the expecting mother can use it.

SUYON-1
SUYON-2

SUYON cons

  • It requires two or three coats for good coverage.

  • The price was a bit pricey than other brands.

  • My sister told me that the brush was too short, but for me is okay.

Other kids-friendly nail polish pros and cons

Like I said, I’ve tried many kids friendly nail polish before I finally found SUYON, such as Nailmatic nail polish (a France brand), Zoo nail polish (a Taiwanese brand), Shu Shu and Sassy (a Korean brand). Here are what I think of their pros and cons, based on my daughter and my experience.

Other kids-friendly nail polish pros

  • The price might lower than SUYON, there are lots of kids-friendly nail polish choices on the market, you can choose according to your budget.

Other kids-friendly nail polish cons

  • Some of them too easy to peel off :( and some of them are taking soooo much time to dry, my daughter doesn’t have that patience.

KiddiKutter kid-safe knife, cuts food not fingers!

One of the best family bonding activity is cooking, but is it safe to let children around kitchen? I totally understand that the idea of giving children under the age of 10 a knife of any kind seemed dangerous. Today we would like to give a special introduction to KiddiKutter because we received so many questions about “What is the best knife for kid?”, “Is there any recommended kid-safe knife?”. Let me tell you about that..

Kid-safe knife types

1. Safety knife

Slightly older children (think: 3- to 5-year-olds) can be introduced to safety knives. Many of these knives have real metal blades with a flat blunt edge. They make easy work of most fruits and vegetables, save for hard squashes and watermelon rinds. This is a good knife to practice safe knife holding and handling.

2. Nylon knife

Start really young cooks off with a nylon knife set, which mimics the weight, shape, and feel of a chef’s knife without the sharp edge. The serrated edge makes cutting bread, cheese, soft fruit, and vegetables possible.

3. Small Santoku

A smaller knife with a sharp edge is the perfect in-between knife for children 6 to 10 years old. Their hands aren’t quite large enough for a full-sized chef’s knife, but they have the hand-eye coordination required to yield a real knife blade.

About KiddiKutter

When Maria Georgiou’s son was three, he asked if he could help in the kitchen. But because he had dyspraxia (clumsy child syndrome), handing him a knife was courting disaster. However, this sparked an idea. In 2000, Maria began looking for a solution that would allow little ones to assist in the kitchen. KiddiKutter was born. With worldwide trademarks, the children’s knife has passed strict European and Australian safety certifications to ensure it’s safe and nontoxic to use with food, something other companies have not done.

Maria has been nicknamed the ‘accidental entrepreneur’ as a one-woman business success, and as a result has made it through as a finalist in, The Housewares Innovation Awards 2019, England.

In today’s modern world, promoting a healthy diet amongst children is more important than ever. With KiddiKutter, you can have a safe family bonding time.

KiddiKutter cuts food not fingers!

Children love to help in the kitchen cutting up their own food and help preparing dinner. They can learn so much in the kitchen including, maths and chemistry, not to mention improving their fine motor skills cutting small pieces of fruit or vegetables. Using KiddiKutter knives will also improve hand eye coordination.

KiddiKutters will cut most food that a sharp knife will but by using a sawing action. Always remember, they are not sharp, so KiddiKutters don’t chop.

Kiddikutter is now NDIS approved.

As with any activity involving small children, we advise that there is some adult supervision. KiddiKutters have proven useful for both children and adults with special needs, in particular  Autism and visual impairment. They are great to carry in your nappy-bag for cutting up fruit and nibbles while you having picnic.
