End of year is always the best time to reflect. 

Thanks to year 2021 who teach me how to be patient.

I am a person who wants everything to be done fast. If there is a problem, it must be solved as soon as possible. Likewise with all the plans that I have prepared for 2021, I hope everything goes according to my plan.

But like the famous quote said -

Man proposes, God disposes.

Many of us thought the pandemic will end at 2021, but the reality is not much different from 2020. The world is pushing us nothing but to wait.

I was reminded that having a plan is something great, and everything will be even greater if the plan can be implemented at the right time and place. A great timing can leverage our plans, achieving the biggest result with the least amount of effort.

We all can see it clearly, although the pandemic still going on, but people have found a new way - a new normal, they said - to comeback.

This year BabyLux may lost some business clients, but we are very grateful that we are able to establish new partnership. Thanks to all partners that are still here with us, together we will be the Goliaths of baby industry. 

Huge applause to our Indonesian partners who grow 100% from last year, and to our Singaporean partners that also manage keeping such a big achievement.

After all, it is okay to wait, great things takes time. 2022, we will comeback strong!

5 Booth that you must visit in IMBEX 2021 - Indonesia Maternity, Baby & Kids Expo

This time we are going to take you to a virtual exhibition in Indonesia, IMBEX - Indonesia Maternity, Baby & Kids Expo, after canceling this big event for almost 2 years, finally the situation in Indonesia is allowing exhibitions to be held again. Same as years before, IMBEX was held in Jakarta Convention Center for 3 days, 26-28 November 2021.

What makes IMBEX 2021 different with years before? Due to COVID-19, the exhibition has limited the visitor, and entering time is divided into 3 groups, which is Group 1 (09:00-12:00), Group 2 (12:30-15:30), Group 3 (16:00-19:00).

▼ When you arrived, you need to be in line, the staff will check each visitor’s ticket and body temperature. This year, all tickets can only be bought online. Everyone must wear double mask in the exhibit area, and wash your hand before entering the hall. That’s why the line is so long.

▼ After being in line for almost 45 minutes, I finally can enter the building. They change our ticket to this visitor bracelet.

▼ This sign is everywhere, the exhibitor keep reminding us to stay in distance, wear mask and wash our hand frequently. Also, we can’t use cash for transaction. But they have prepare the card payment and QR code payment as well.

2021 Taipei Mom & Baby Expo - Take you to a virtual exhibition!

Many country’s exhibition have been canceled due to COVID-19, we are lucky enough to finally experience one of the biggest exhibition in Taiwan and participated. Our biggest achievement in 2021 was being able to collaborate with Disney. And yes, this is the first time Mommy and Daddy can finally see our Disney crossover products in physical.

As a mom of a little girl and boy, I have had our fair share of nail painting. When my daughter was younger, she was very much into it and would sit at her art table with full concentration on painting her own nails and toes. It is all begin when two designer from Denmark came up with this design idea. He was part-time in the kindergarten, he saw the way children playing with their toys or games. Of course, after many years of research and improvement finally we are able to have today's design.

The name of BAKOBA floating blocks comes from a small white flower called Bacopa. Bacopa has a very amphibious growth, it can not only grow in the soil buBakobat also float on the water, hence the name. So the designer drew inspiration from it and had this amphibious idea. This unique design also allowed BAKOBA to win the 2012 German Red Dot Design Award! The design originated from Denmark, but if you look closely it is Made in Taiwan.

In 2012, when BAKOBA first came out, the design size was 20 times larger than it is now! I know, it is huge! You may can only see that kind of toy in the museum, it is too big to have it at home.

Fortunately, the designer later reduced it to a size that is more suitable for ordinary families. Don't think these building blocks look so small, but in fact they are still big! But it's very easy to hold and safe! So now many kindergartens in Europe use BAKOBA as teaching tools.

Best self feeding age

Learning to self feeding can generally begin at the age of 9 months, when children are able to grasp their own food. At this age, parents is allowed to give them finger foods or foods that are easy to grasp. Children will become interested in holding their own spoon, fork, or water bottle in both hands when they are 13–15 months old.

In my daughter case, I let her start hold when she was 7 months. The food does not always fill the spoon and she not always succeeds in putting it in her mouth. Not a little food will also fall on the floor or table.

Around 18-24 months of age, they will begin to be adept at putting their own food into his mouth less messy. However, your little one must always be supervised when learning to eat on their own. Because they are still learning, sometimes children may choke, cough, or vomit. Later when your little one enters the age of 24–36 months, they will be more adept at eating and enjoying their own food without the need for help from adults.

My favorite self feeding spoon

You might be wondering if you can just get away with using a regular old steel spoon to feed your baby. After all, if it’s good enough for you to eat with, shouldn’t it be fine for a baby?

Some old-school parents will shrug and say that you can feed a toddler just fine without buying yet another special tool. But most feeding authorities recommend using a shallow, plastic children’s spoon for feeding, since it’s easier for them to eat from and won’t hurt their delicate mouths.

Dear partners,

It needn’t be said that 2020 has been an odd one. It has been a challenge that makes most people have to adapt to so called new normal.

For me, 2020 is a year of reflection, learning and full of blessing.

I ended 2019 with a very-looking-forward-to-2020 feeling. BabyLux have grown so much, we were carrying more baby product brands to Asia’s market, made several new friends with BabyLux partners - you are not just a clients, and yet to say BabyLux had achieve an impressive numbers.

When I still learn my way to navigate, COVID-19 hits. Many countries were having large-scale restrictions and some even are still in lockdown until today, it force us to stay at home. Being relocated in Indonesia and stuck at home has forced me to reprioritize what is important in my life, to be sharp focus.

I am always a family person, family has been my rock. I am grateful despite the lockdown, everybody is safe and sound. Being cooped up working from home has made me value the space I have around me. How much I miss working from BabyLux Taiwan office with an ergonomic chair and how I miss my office-based-colleague.

The pandemic has been pushing us to look for opportunities that come with it, not only focus on the challenges: to appreciate what we have in life, reconnect with our hobbies, exposed to new things and deepen our self understanding. It is very liberating to know that we’re capable not only to adapt but thrive on change.

Baby led weaning (BLW) could be so messy and frustrating, but BLW is totally worth the mess! So I choose to raise my baby with BLW method and I know I need to stocking up on a few great BLW bibs, it help me to feel so much happier while doing BLW. No constantly stress about the mess and instead I can enjoy eating with my daughter. I have 3 great bibs, Grabease, Bumkins, and Tidy-tot. I’ll let you know the pros and cons of each bibs.

Why we need bibs when BLW

It is of course to minimize the mess. A good bib can catch food easily, some bibs offer full coverage over clothing including sleeves, others are made from soft muslin or high-tech neoprene and some are more rigid, made with pockets to collect any spills. Not all bibs are equal and it is important to look for fabrics that are comfortable, protective, durable and washable, along with a design suited to your child’s stage and that is easy to fasten.

I always look for a durable, easy to wash and the perfect size for protecting baby’s clothes but not getting in the way of self-feeding. I also love bibs with a handy pocket to catch falling food. With a fresh bib for each meal, I can recycle food that’s fallen into the pocket back on to baby’s plate or bowl, also helping to minimize food waste.

But if you are one of those moms whose always let your child naked, then you might not need the bibs so much, haha.

Bumkins sleeved bibs pros and cons

The good:

• Lightweight but durable long-sleeved bibs featuring a catcher pocket.

• Bumkins sleeved bibs protect almost every inch of my daughter’s clothes from spills

• They machine wash

• Free from BPA, PVC, phthalates and lead

• I love the tie back, not only it gives plenty of room to grow, my daughter keep pulling off the bibs that have velcro

• Wrists have little cuffs so nothing can get up the sleeves

The not so good:

• One small criticism from me was that the bibs could get stained with time

• If I went to a restaurant without air conditioner, my daughter will be pretty cranky due to the long sleeves and she feel hot.. I recommend it for at-home-usage

The good:

• Large size covers my daughter and it perfectly pairs with my high chair

The good:

• The tray can be used for weaning and messy play, keeps food and toys off the floor

• The tray is easy to assemble, folds away for easy storage

• Comes with a storage bag

The not so good:

• I rarely use Tidy tots iconic bibs, in my point of view this bibs is not that convenient, it contains bibs and the tray, which I need to clean 2 separate items.

• It is hard to find a big space to dry out the tray, since it is pretty big.

• My daughter feels left out when she use Tidy tot, because the tray is so big, although she usually sit in her highchair, but Tidy tot’s tray is so big, feels distance, haha, what a dramatic daughter.

• She lover drawing, but the tray is not steady enough for drawing purpose.

Conclusion

Over all, if for home use, I like Grabease better than Bumkins. The Grabease bibs can protect my daughter from the mess better and catch the food better. Maybe some of you will concern about the Grabease bibs short sleeves, but this is the feature I like about. I am living in Asia, most of the time is hot here, I’ll let my daughter wear sleeveless clothes, so the short sleeve is not a problem for me. What I like most about Bumkins is the tie back feature. Cotton fabric is the most popular choice for children's and baby apparel. Cotton is soft and highly absorbent, and it is gentle against a baby's skin. But now is 2021, we have many types of fabric on the market and with so many different types to choose from, where do we start?

What is the best fabric for my baby?

It is not the case that if you don’t use a 100% natural fabric, that it will irritate your baby – not at all – but especially if your little cherub has sensitive skin we should consider below points before buying clothes or fabric for our baby.

The primary consideration - Sensitivity & Comfort

Younger skin is more sensitive most of the time. This means that one of first thing you should take into consideration when fabric shopping is that it’s both soft and comfortable. The last thing you want is baby clothes that rub or irritate it.

Comfort should also be a major factor, although this does link it with the sensitivity, ideally, you’d be looking for a soft material, probably smooth. You’ll also need a fabric that will stay soft, and not get rough over time and irritate the child’s skin.

Movement

These early stages of life are important – learning to roll over, lift your head, crawl, walk and so much more. Baby clothes need to allow this movement and not be restrictive, otherwise, it may stunt this all-important development.

Breathability

This one is a little complicated. You will want your baby clothes to be breathable, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it needs to be a thin or lightweight fabric. A breathable fabric needs to have the ability to allow moisture vapor to be passed through it.

Tencel VS Rayon

Tencel is somewhat similar to rayon because they’re what the industry refers to as “regenerated cellulose” fibers. Manufacturers take wood pulp, dissolve it in a chemical solvent, then push it through an extruder to form the fibers.

The big difference is rayon requires more energy and chemicals to produce, which is both wasteful and toxic for the workers who make it. Tencel, on the other hand, uses chemicals that are less-toxic and get recycled in the process so there’s minimal waste. It also uses wood from trees in sustainably-harvested forests.

How to help my baby develop their pincer grasp?

It is thrilling to see your baby accomplish developmental milestones! While most parents look for common ones like ‘rolling over’ or ‘walking’, a multitude of them are cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pincer grasp is one of them. According to Claire Lerner, “Getting the pincer grasp is one of the biggest keys to independence. Eventually, a child will use this grasp to do essential things like feed and dress herself and brush her teeth.”

Holding your finger also can shown your baby is developing pincer grasp.

What is the pincer grasp?

Basically, the pincer grasp is the coordination of the index finger and thumb to hold an item. It helps your little one understand how to pick up things. Once they learn to use pincer grasp or pincer grip, they can successfully feed theirselves with fingers and even can use a spoon. We use pincer grasp daily - when we're holding a pencil, buttoning a shirt, and picking up small objects.

Babies usually develop their pincer grasp between the ages of 9 to 12 months. As babies start to use the pincer grasp, it represents development of other fine motor skills that involve muscles in their hands, strength, and hand-eye coordination.

How can I help my babies when they developing pincer grasp?

We can help baby's progress by allowing them to play with (appropriate) small items and toys and letting them self-feed. Their pincer grasp can be developed as they play with toys that require them to squeezed, pushed together, pulled apart, picked up, etc. These actions later progress into ones such as painting, coloring, writing, tying their shoes, and other skills.

Encouraging the pincer grasp skill simply means allowing the little explorer to investigate a lot with fingers. Let her enjoy touching and manipulating toys or household objects.

Wondering which hand is the correct hand for baby to use?

Now is NOT the time for babies to develop a hand preference. Why? Because by learning to use either hand means baby is also using BOTH sides of her brain. Very young children often use both hands equally. Most children have a preference for using one hand or the other by the age of about 18 months, and are definitely right or left-handed by about the age of three.

We’re focusing on brain development (rather than developing hand dominance, typically seen closer to age three or even four) so parent proactively & encourage baby to learn to fork with both hands.

What happens after the pincer grasp development?

Once the pincer grasp is developed, grasping becomes precise. Babies explore more by shaking, moving, throwing, and rotating. Mouth is no longer their primary sensory preceptor. They use both the hands to determine the size, hardness, texture, weight, and other properties.

Pincer grasp helps in later activities such as writing, coloring with crayons, cutting with scissors, and so on. The child’s preference for using left or right hand emerges slowly, although it can completely develop by two or three years.

What to play in autumn? 5 awesome autumn-themed STEAM activities

1. Mid-Autumn Festival Moon Viewing Science: Oreo Biscuit Moon Experiment

The most important festival in autumn is the Mid-Autumn Festival! I wonder if you have any fixed activities during the Mid-Autumn Festival? I love barbecue and grapefruit! (So not creative).

If you want to play something different with your kids during the Mid-Autumn Festival, you must try using Oreo cookies to learn the moon's ecstasy, just do it!

Things need to be prepared

• 8 Oreo cookies

• Learning chart (not necessary)

How to do the Oreo biscuit moon experiment?

1. Explain why the moon is cloudy and clear.

2. Use the cream filling of the biscuit to make moon phase changes.

3. Take the child to observe the moon phase changes.

2. Know the fruits of the season: DIY apple life cycle hat

Autumn is the season of apple. Apple is the healthy and a very good fruit. Take advantage of this season to do a little STEAM activities with your children and let them know the growth of apple!

Things need to be prepared

• Drawing paper

• Pencil, colored pen or watercolor

• Double-sided tape

How to make the apple lifecycle hat?

1. Draw a periodic pattern of "from seed to apple" on the drawing paper.

2. Cut out a long piece of paper, wrap it around and stick it as a hat.

3. Paste the drawn patterns on the edge of the hat, and you are done!

You can also search for "apple life circle" on the Internet, and there will be many apple growth patterns or study sheets.

3. Halloween pumpkin volcano

Autumn is also the season for Halloween. In addition to the Halloween costume parade, you might as well have a more weird "Pumpkin Volcano" science experiment with your children!

• Dishwashing liquid

• Baking soda

• White vinegar

• Food coloring (orange, purple, green)

• Small pumpkin

• Others: knife, small spoon, small container

How to make Halloween pumpkin volcano?

1. Cut the pumpkin head and clean the seeds.

2. Pour a teaspoon of baking soda in each pumpkin.

3. Add a little dishwashing liquid.

4. Add food paint.

5. Finally, pour 1/3 cup of white vinegar to complete.

Observe carefully, what will happen to the pumpkin?

Adding acid (such as acetic acid) to baking soda will cause a chemical reaction to produce carbon dioxide. At this time, many bubbles will be generated inside the pumpkin. As the carbon dioxide increases, the bubbles will be squeezed out, which looks like a volcanic eruption!

4. Maple leaf dyeing science experiment

This is a very simple scientific experiment that is very suitable for autumn. But first you have to take your children out to "collect maple leaves". Take the opportunity to take the children out for a walk!

How to do the scientific experiment of maple leaf dyeing?

1. First, wash the picked up maple leaves and blanch them in boiling water for 5 minutes.

2. Take the leaves out and place them on the tabletop to warm them up.

3. Pour alcohol into the transparent test tube container.

4. Put the maple leaf directly into the alcohol and let it stand overnight.

Get up the next day and you will see Maple Leaf stained with alcohol! It turns out that the cooked leaves have no cuticle protection. When they are soaked in alcohol, the chloroplasts of the leaves will be removed and dissolved in alcohol to form dyeing. It is beautiful, right?

5. Use building blocks to create pumpkin

Seeing a foreign teacher using Lego bricks to teach children to make pumpkins, I think that Plus-Plus is more suitable! Because you can make an "arc shape" with Plus-Plus, and it can construct a very stunning shape whether it is flat or a 3D design!

Business opportunity during pandemic - The rising of toy industry

We’ve been ‘stuck’ at home since the beginning of 2020, it is already more than a year nowr. Some countries might start letting kids back to school, some countries might still struggle and decide to extend the lockdown. With this article, I would like to share my observation through all this pandemic time. How it affect our baby product business. You will be surprised that actually the toy industry are rising. And what toy category that rising up so much during pandemic.

Toy industry's may be thanking to pandemic

Parents pointed to loss of income and uncertain economic climate as two factors that would require them to rethink some of their spending even when stores reopen their doors.  Just another factor certain to affect toy sales this year. 

So what steps can toy makers take to head off these challenges?  They must do what they do best: turn to new bells and whistles and think outside the box.

1. Toy brands should turn to new ways to engage moms and kids which allow them to interact with their toys. 

2. Leveraging influencers to host in-home playdates that allow kids to touch and play with the hottest new toy while moms look on is just one way. 

3. It might also include product demonstrations in driveways and cul-de-sacs, or the seamless integration of social media with platforms that really matter to moms.

Now is the time for toy makers to be as innovative with their marketing as they are with their new products.  With a little creativity and strategic thinking, toy makers have the opportunity to navigate the shift in family toy buying that’s headed their way.

The rising toy category during pandemic

Building blocks

In late April, sales of Legos were up 64% year over year on eBay Australia, and rose as high as 92% one Sunday night. Basic Fun, the maker of Lite-Brite, Lincoln Logs, and K’nex—old-school toys that require users to think creatively and put things together with their bare hands—has also seen sales soar. Chief Executive Jay Foreman told the New York Post that the company had its best first quarter ever this year.

The Chief Executive of MGA Entertainment, which manufactures play houses, basketball hoops, and trampolines, recently reported that sales were up 100% in March compared to 2019.

Musical and art & drawing toys

Without formal art classes to attend, children are expressing themselves through drawing, painting, coloring, sculpting, and crafting. Music classes have been canceled along with the rest of school (not to mention live festivals and concerts).

Art & Drawing Toys, which includes play dough, putty and drawing tablets, went up in Russia (+35%), the UK (+141%), Germany (+159%), France (+261%), the US (+653%), and Brazil (+674%), compared to January. Musical Toys were also up in the Netherlands (+40) and Brazil (+166%).
